My 100 happy book

I started writing in my little notebook, with the aim of writing something in every day that made me happy. I write at the end of every day, so I can go to sleep with something pleasant in my brain-space :o) (Yes, it works!)

If anyone else wants to join in, please do let me know!

#100happy from the BBC

The BBC asked people to write in with their happy things and compiled them into this article.

Here's some of my favourites:

I am revising for my A-levels next week. Happiness is when your family make a huge barbecue and picnic extremely quietly, sneak into the house and burst into the room shouting "surprise!" and brandishing a cold beer!
Katy, UK

Happiness to me, can be ever so lasting, when I am connected to my creator. When I am in touch, I am rewarded, I am reminded always, of love, kindness, forgiveness, compassion, generosity, humility, understanding, tolerance, curiosity, humbleness, beauty, of peace. In those moments I can see what life is all about. In those moments I have glimpsed the whole picture.
Nourel, UK

Happiness is what everyone looks for. Everything we do is primarily for happiness. I would like to share something I came across on a poster which goes something like this ... "This is the time to be happy and this is the place to be happy. The way to be happy is to make others happy." I've tried and it works!!
Anoop, India

Here are some things that make me happy: becoming a Grandma is an almost certain recipe for happiness; having a funny old husband to cuddle up to, to find your glasses and keys when you lose them, and put a lovely warm wheat bag in the bed at night; three friendly Labradors to welcome you home in the evening; hanging out the washing on a fine sunny day; having a job working with teenagers where every day produces lots of laughs and plenty of challenges, a glass of Waipara Springs Reserve Pinot Noir, friends coming to stay; and, of course, chocolates.
Ros Rossiter, New Zealand

I am only 13 but I constantly wish I could do something to help people feel happier. I think it would be good for schools to encourage more youth groups that go into the communities and help out. I would love to have a youth group in my town where people can make friends and work hard to make their community better, but people just can't be bothered to help without getting anything in return.
Amy, UK
An Indian Swami gave me this equation of happiness. Happiness = number of desires fulfilled / number of desires created. The happiness increases if you increase the numerator, as one feels happy as soon as one's desire is fulfilled, or you decrease the denominator ie create fewer desires. As the mind is capable of increasing the denominator endlessly and there are practical limitations in increasing the numerator, it is better to train the mind to generate fewer desires. A person with no desires is the happiest person on earth.

#100happy today: People Should Smile More

#100happy is everywhere.

100 Happy is one thing per day that makes you smile. Feel-good ammunition for when things get tough and the promotion of day-to-day mental wellbeing.

After reading this Opendiary entry trying to spread smiles throughout the world, I felt like trying it myself.

Tomorrow I will post some of these:

in random places in my world and record any reactions they get :)

Stay tuned...

Kickarse Poetry: "Invictus"

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

 ~ William Ernest Henley

Stoic Henley suffered bone tuberculosis and had to have most of his leg amputated aged 17 but wrote ^ this in 1875 to defy melancholy and encourage determination within himself. What a dude.

Credit for introducing me to this poem goes to Front magazine, by the way (if you're reading this at work, be warned that if you click the link for the mag there will be bare boobies, ohnoes!) as model Emily has the final verse tattooed on her arm which is kinda cool.

Song Lyrics of Awesome - Lonyo

Close your eyes whilst listening to this and sway, remembering when you were in your late teens and there was that certain guy or girl on holiday that you were properly Jonesing for.

Ahhh, nostalgia, you fit-ass beast.

~

Mi unico anhelo es..
No volver a pensar en ti
I want you to know
That my heart and soul's for you
And I thought you should know
I'll do anything you want me to
Move your body round me
Come on and get undone
It's the summer of love
Move your body round me
Get off and get undone
It's the summer of love
Sending out an S.O.S.
It's the summer of love
Sexy girl, it's time to get your ass
'Cause it's the summer of love
Sending out an S.O.S.
It's the summer of love
Freakin' girl, you got an entrance
Sexy girls
Are with the bad boys in the club
All they wanna do
Is feel the heat of summerlove
Move your body round me
Come on and get undone

Song Lyrics of Awesome - Incubus

Hey now, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
Even diamonds start as coal
Give us time to shine
Even diamonds start as coal
We’re incomplete and infantine
Even diamonds start as coal.
Give it time girl, the fire feels divine
The sweetest things
They burn before they shine
We think way too much
Look at us losing touch
A promise is a promise until...
Yeah, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
Even diamonds start as coal
Give us time to shine
Even diamonds starts as coal.

You can do anything.

Hygge Hugs

After watching an episode of BBC's Coast (you can watch it here), I felt compelled to look into the Danish Art of "Hygge" more closely.

Described as a feeling of "cosiness", I couldn't think of anything more fitting for this blog, really.

Hygge can be anything: sitting in front of a roaring fire with a hot spiced tea, spending time with friends and family on the beach and singing a song together... anything that is familiar, nostalgic, heartwarming.

Hygge is apparently pretty difficult to describe as there are no synonyms for it in another language than Danish, but this website describes it in such a lovely way.

And here are a few of my favourite images from Flickr that I think sum-up what my interpretation of "hygge" is:-

This is such a sweet little song. Even if it does remind me of a bread advert. It's just so, so lovely <3

Enjoy!

Remember 9/11 for the stories of bravery, love and kindness of people who refused to cower in the face of terror. Lest we forget. "In the depths of winter, I finally realised that there was within me an invincible summer" ~ Albert Dumas. Remember that you all have these qualities within you and use them every day. <3

Honey Bear's Underwear

Sometimes I drop my plate
Sometimes I spill my drink
But even when I make mistakes, I know
the Sunshine's always hiding inside of me
Wise words of the sweet, sweet honey bear!

Hey, your flies are undone!

This little bit of research from YouGov amused me:

82% of British people would tell someone they knew if they had accidentally left their flies undone

87% would let a friend or acquaintance know if they’d accidentally tucked their skirt into the back of their underwear

See the full results here.

IrisMacro and I are trying to compile a list of happy things. It started off as a quest to find 100 things that make us happy and is affiliated with Iris' awesome blog, UNdane: Iris Jones vs. The Great Mundane.

But we're not happy with that. We won't stop 'til we're at 100 BILLION happy things! :o)

We started the #100happy tag on Twitter to try and spread the joy and also created a Flickr group to share the photographs that make us smile.

#100happy can be anything that makes you feel happy: as big as the thought that one day there might be world piece, or as silly as the realisation that there's a plate of cold sausages in your fridge when you get home from work.

Here's a few of our faves:
